So i'm alive and well in Spain, recording things has been pretty poor on my part, the best way to convey my day is to write in the form of diary entry for my first arrival to Spain, then try and get everything else down.
4/11/10
woke up at 5.20, lost ipod. Good start
6.00am got to airport and managed to check in OK.
6.55am, 5 mins before i need to go through the barriers into departures i manage to lose all my english money. if this is how i am with money, looking after two children is going to be just as interesting.
7.00am, i have two hours to kill before my flight leaves. Find money in top pocket and decided to just get rid of all of it by purchasing some ear phones.
7.15am, after purchasing ear phones, i realise i have no manner of opening the packet due to flight restrictions on carrying sharp objects. Airport security really need to rethink their priorities. Decide to get rid of rest of cash by walking over to WH Smith and getting a book. Manage to forget earphones at the checkout. So who suggested this would be a good idea again? After rushing back to the checkout i sit down and attempt to relax. At this point i realise i forgot my razor charger. On the bright side of things im still alive.
7.47, after half an hour of searching manage to find pen. My destination is so long that the name of it doesnt fit on the screen. I've decided to learn a new phrase in Spanish "my name is Josh" just doesnt seem sufficient funnily enough.
9.30, currently on the plane. Most amusing sight so far is the morbidly obese man who also happens to be drunk walking up the runway to the stair of the plane. Stopping at the bottom and just staring up with a sense of extreme pain as to the challenge that stood before him. Also im rather glad i managed to get the fire exit seats. There's a baby on board whose sole goal seems to cry from Stanstead to Santiago. Thank goodness we're at opposite ends of the plane, although im pretty sure i can hear its wails through my earphones. Fun times.
Thats the extent of my day recording. To sum up arriving in Spain to the present moment, its been pretty surreal. I was greeted upon arrival by the father and the previous au pair. The Dad is called Daniel and has pretty solid English, just unfortunately a rather thick accent to go with it. The previous au pair is called Monika and has been my lifeline these few days. Her Spanish is almost perfect and shes American so having someone to talk to has been really nice. She went out this afternoon and its only dawned on me now how potentially lonely this job can be. The kids are interesting. The boy is Olmo and hes 10 years old, and the little girl is called Elisa and shes 7. Theyre both full of energy and its going to be great getting to know them, despite the language barrier. The one thing thats surprised me here is the drug culture as well as how relaxed everyone is. Concerning the drug culture, they have a weed shop in the local town. Crazy huh? And just generally everyone goes so slowly compared to London. It seems theyve got no cares in the world and are just happy to float along with the world. Its intriguing. On a lighter note, upon arrival i also discovered i had forgotten my 'Idiot Abroad' book. Ironic huh?
